The Big Spill | Environmental Book Apps
This is a wonderful tale for kids and parents alike. Thing is, it’s more than a tale. It is based on a true story of a grounded oil ship and the penguins that were endangered! Purchase of this book supports the people behind the African Penguins! The story itself is valuable. The lessons a child would learn by getting involved can be life changing. The narration is excellent and by Lisa Templeton, words and concept by Linda Fellowes and artwork by Tee.The app is presented by RocksolidSystems. I show a lot of the book so you can see the scope of these issues. There are amazing adventures that are not shown during their long swim home, so please buy it!

Meet The Developer!
What was the initial inspiration for your app?
I live in what must be one of the most beautiful places on earth, Noordhoek near Cape Town in South Africa. We have an abundance of mountains and beaches and of course all the wild life that goes with it. Sea Otters, Southern Right Whales , Dolphins, Seals, Baboons and of course Penguins. When I first saw Lulu’s books (in print version) – I was immediately taken by the simplicity and beauty of the message in them, especially “The Big Spill” – as our colony of Jackass Penguins had always intrigued me. In the past, I had taken part in similar clean-up operations and have seen first-hand what oil can do these amazing little creatures. That is what inspired me to create the app thus hoping for a wider audience to further the cause.
What is your favourite aspect of your app?
I love the way the Sea and bird sounds bring to life the actual atmosphere of our environment. The verse is great as is the beautiful narration. The characters are lovable and the enables the message to be broadcast in a fun way.
Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Our environment is everything. Looking after it before it deteriorates too far is absolutely vital for our survival. It is important that our kids understand this and are given the opportunity to help prevent disasters of our own making.
I bought this Ipad ap to treat my grandchildren aged 4 and 2. They were enthralled and we battled to get the ipad away from them. Their parents have subsequently bought it as well. It’s a sweet story that seems to appeal to children of all ages (our 11 year old son was also interested). It’s educational, the drawing are lovely and it’s nicely narrated. Worth every penny!
Hi Claudia!
I agree completely! This book app tugs at all ages. The truth behind it is enticing as well. Your 11 year old might like to see the activities of those who help penguins at http://www.africanpenguin.co.za/penguinsponsor.html. This app helps to support them!
My grandson is almost 4 and also is enthralled by the book apps we find for him – such great lessons!
