What was the initial inspiration for your app?
Fletcher: Puppup, of course! Puppup was our daughter Julia’s playmate, her muse and her partner in crime. Prior to each family outing or special occasion Julia dressed Puppup and chose props based on our plans for the day. And you have to admit that he is awfully cute so you can understand why it was natural for us to want to share him with other kids now that Julia is grown up. Luckily we’d saved all Puppup’s clothes!
Linda: Because Puppup was an out-and-about kind of guy, he was lost on more than one occasion, which prompted us to imagine what he might have been up to while he was missing. In fact the heart-shaped tag on Puppup’s collar, which bears his name and our phone number, was our remedy after a few close calls! We have a few more stories in the works based on Puppup’s adventures. Suffice it to say that the zoo was not the only place Puppup was lost.
What is your favorite aspect of your app?
Linda: I don’t know why but the first time I saw the Kangaroo page animated I fell in love with it. Fletcher had her hop away but then it surprised me that he had her hop back into the frame and stop. Maybe it’s just the look on her face but every time I look at that page I crack up. Same thing with the peacock – the tail fanning is delightful every time.
Fletcher: I’m a fan of the chimp and lemur pages, myself. I think the app does what we’d set out to accomplish – it captures Puppup’s personality. I think all kids can relate to the idea of their stuffed animal coming to life and having an adventure. We feel pretty sure it’s the kind of story that kids will want to experience over and over again.
Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
We have always been huge fans of traditional picture books for our kids. In doing this project we came to learn in more detail the many developmental and educational benefits of picture books so now we really feel like the simple story of Puppup brings an added advantage that we didn’t really aim for but nonetheless have achieved.
It’s picture books’ multi-sensory experience of words and pictures (and the addition of sound, music, motion and interactivity that iPad technology allows our app to bring to the table) that make them critical steps in the process of developing into a literate adult. Picture books introduce the concept of type forming words and words conveying thoughts; they enhance visual literacy, or the ability to understand the meaning of pictures; and they introduce literary elements such as character, plot, setting and theme. Of course the kids don’t know all this learning is going on – they are just enjoying a great story experience! Finally, we want to say thanks to those who have purchased our app. Your support means a lot.
