Science Apps | Puzzling Plates
Puzzling Plates is interactive, and enticing, that inspires kids! Tectonic plates that make up the surface of Earth are your challenge and you get to manipulate them to learn more!
There are three levels, each with interactivity, plus a bonus round. Level 1, How tectonic plates fit together by moving them into position like a jigsaw puzzle. Level 2 See where earthquakes and volcanoes form on Earth’s surface and explore Earth’s interior! Level 3 you move tectonic plates in different directions to find out what type of boundary is shown.

Meet The Developer!
What was the initial inspiration for Puzzling Plates?
Our initial goal was to make learning about geology fun and interactive. Plate tectonics is the driving force that shapes our planet. Since Earth’s surface is composed of tectonic plates that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, it just made sense to use that metaphor for a hands-on activity that encourages exploration of geology.
What is your favorite aspect of your app?
The app is more than just a jigsaw puzzle. Additional levels stimulate the investigation of the relationships between tectonic plates, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Users can discover on their own why earthquakes and volcanoes occur where they do. Animations show how plate boundaries collide and split apart. Then you actually move tectonic plates in different directions to discover which type of boundary is present. To make learning fun, the app includes scoring.
