What was the initial inspiration for your app?

In 1987, I founded Analekta. Today, over 30 years later, Analekta is considered Canada’s largest independent classical music record label and among the top 15 largest independent classical labels in the world. I have dedicated my career to promoting music and making it accessible to larger audiences. This is why I initiated the Mazaam project.

My wife, One of the most prominent violin virtuosos of her generation, Angèle Dubeau has led an outstanding career for over 40 years in the great concert halls of the world. While her virtuosity and musicality have garnered numerous awards over the years, concertgoers love Angèle Dubeau for her captivating music, her extraordinary gift as a communicator, and her ability to connect with her audience. Today, she is more convinced than ever of the need to introduce classical music to a wider audience.

We have joined forces on the Mazaam project’s educational mission with a single goal – to deliver the benefits of classical music to a new generation of listeners.

What is your favorite aspect of your app?

With Mazaam, little ones discover music very playfully, and their parents accompany them in their approach. By playing, children learn to detect and identify pitch, intensity, timbre or harmony by association. All the music is made with real instruments. 

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

To build Mazaam, we have called on professionals in two areas of expertise. The app is based on the research and the work of the Canada Research Chair in Music and Learning, spearheaded by professor Jonathan Bolduc and was developed by Tobostudio, a wonderful youth video game studio.

The app offers activities adapted to children 4, 5 or 6 years old . By developing their musical knowledge, children acquire several strategies that later will support every sphere of their cognitive development.

As we know, a tablet must not replace the parent – quite the contrary. That is why we also integrate a component that leads parents to participate in Mazaam’s activities.

With Mazaam, the parent is integrated into the child’s learning and interacts with the child.

Mazaam was designed with the goal of introducing children and their parents to classical music. It relies on many excerpts that can be found in their full version in the catalogue published by Analekta. Progress can be consolidated by learning the source of the piece the child just heard and who composed it. So Mazaam benefits the entire family!
