What was the initial inspiration for Penelope HD?
My daughter is my inspiration for all of my children’s stories! Penelope the Purple Pirate came about over 2 1/2 years ago. My husband was telling my daughter a bedtime story about Red Beard Pirate and his adventures looking for treasure. The idea to create a redhead girl pirate came to me then and it took about a year to write it and edit it to my liking. I then set about finding an illustrator and was fortunate to have a contact through my father-in-law who is good friends with my illustrator, Paul Johnson’s, wife. Paul put together some illustrations of Penelope and I sent them off to PicPocket Books September of 2010. I was so excited when Lynette Mattke of PicPocket Books accepted Penelope and the storybook app became available January of 2011. We are so excited that children enjoy Penelope and her adventures and thrilled that she has been downloaded over 10,000 times! Her next adventure takes her to the Wild West and a deserted mining town looking for a purple stone. Penelope the Purple Pardner will be available this June.
What is your favorite aspect of your app?
I love when they come across Captain Funny Bones treasure chest! The excitement of finding treasure is a universal childhood dream I think – so this just might be my favorite part of the story. As a former teacher, I wanted to include fun facts about the sea creatures and pirates in the story. This sets Penelope apart from other storybook apps as this is not a feature usually found in books. Also, I like how Penelope teaches little ones the importance of treating others with kindness and respect just by her actions and kind words.
